A Century of Fiat Automaking

As one of the most beloved automakers in the world, Fiat has enjoyed a fascinating history that includes war, automotive innovation, and international conquest. Below, we've outlined Fiat's history, tracing its country of origin and incredible story over more than 120 years.

Where is FIAT From?

Fiat's origin begins in 1900 when Italian entrepreneur Giovanni Agnelli opened the first Fiat factory in Turin, Italy. Agnelli founded the car company with local investors, calling their newest venture Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino (FIAT), or Italian Automobile Factory of Turin. Fiat's country of origin is Italy, where the brand established its identity as an automotive pioneer. Their first factory was relatively small, employing only 150 people daily. However, the tiny automaker proved successful in its original country, which cleared the way for Agnelli to establish the first Fiat factory in the U.S. in 1908.

What a Difference a Century Makes

Fiat remained one of the bestselling cars in Europe for decades, especially in its native Italy. It survived Mussolini's reign during WWII, developing new, innovative technology that ventured out into railways, commercial trucks, and even airplanes. After the war, Fiat looked to expand its offerings to the U.S. once more, rebuilding many of its former operations in the States. From that point on, Fiats became popular roadsters in the U.S., especially among young Americans.

Resurgence and Evolution

Fiat left its U.S. operations behind in the early 1980s. Still, the demand for the automobile only increased over the years. This led Fiat to reestablish itself in the States again in 2011. Fiat's ownership history has evolved significantly since then, with the formation of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) and later becoming part of Stellantis in 2021. Today, Stellantis owns Fiat, bringing together several iconic automotive brands under one global company.

Since its return to American shores, Fiat has once again become recognized for its distinctive Italian design and spirited driving experience. Drivers continue to appreciate Fiat's lineup of vehicles that deliver both character and practicality, with models that honor the brand's rich heritage while embracing modern innovation.
