Alfa Romeo has announced its plans to produce its first crossover model in 12 years. Aimed at U.S. drivers, the crossover is set to be a big part of Alfa’s reintroduction to the American automotive market. Alfa Romeo’s first crossover design was the Kamal concept (above) that debuted in 2003.

This new crossover, however, will be around the same size as other popular luxury crossovers. It will boast a high ride height, as well as a superb rear-drive system. Right now, Alfa is calling its new crossover Project 949, though we’re sure the new crossover will get a more market-friendly name by the time it’s announced later this year.

Under the hood, the crossover will be powered by one of the family of engines that Alfa Romeo is producing, such as a new high-output diesel V6. No word yet on when the new Alfa Romeo crossover will come to Phoenix, but look for it sometime in early 2016. Also look for a possible larger crossover model that might follow Project 949 out of the gate.

Take a look at the Kamal concept above to see what possible features the new Project 949 might sport. It’s exciting to see the Alfa Romeo family growing so much in just a few short years. We’re very excited about this newest addition and we can’t want to see all the great features on this newest Alfa Romeo auto.
