Fiat boss Sergio Marchionne has confirmed that the automaker will be naming their newest roadster after the classic 124 Spider. The news was announced at the Geneva Motor Show this March. Fiat has been working with Mazda on planning a few new sports cars for the past few years, so it’s exciting to see the roadster finally get its official name. We're still waiting, however, on specific details on the car's design and power.
The lack of confirmation about the design for the new 124 Spider has many people speculating on the ins and outs of the new Fiat. The original 124 Spider debuted in 1966 and was produced through 1983. Many hope that the new Spider will harken back to its namesake in a more classic design scheme. Top Speed - who created the mock-up of the new Spider below - thinks the roadster could be a nice mix of its Fiat and Mazda parentage, while still harkening back to Fiat roadsters of the past.

Insiders also believe that the Spider will be under 2,200 pounds and will sport a similar - though more powerful - engine to the automaker’s current 160 horsepower 1.4-liter turbo. No official word on when the car will find its way to our showroom, but the automaker says that the new 124 Spider should hit the market by 2016.
