As electric vehicles become more popular and common on American roads, one issue that has become a point of contention is sound. Electric vehicles are practically silent when they run, especially when they travel at lower speeds. While that is usually considered a good thing when it comes to noise pollution, it can create a safety hazard for pedestrians who might not notice how close an EV is getting to them. Fortunately, EVs are now equipped with a feature that will make Scottsdale streets safer for drivers and pedestrians alike.
The Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS) is a system installed in EVs that emits a sound when the vehicle is traveling at speeds between 20 and 30 km per hour or around 12 to 19 miles per hour. The artificial engine sound is loud enough to be heard by pedestrians within about two meters of the vehicle, but it isn't intrusive enough to add to noise pollution or undo any other environmental benefits of electric vehicles.
All new electric vehicles in Europe must be equipped with AVAS per EU regulations. Similar mandates exist in the United States, which is why new FIAT electric vehicle models are no longer completely silent.
Above all else, FIAT is committed to keeping its electric vehicle line safe for drivers and pedestrians everywhere. If you are interested in a new FIAT EV or would like to learn more about how AVAS technology works, visit FIAT of Scottsdale in Scottsdale, AZ. Our staff will be happy to answer all of your questions.
