Founded in 1899, FIAT is celebrating its 125th year in operation. For most of its existence, the company has been one of the most influential in the world and one of the major players in the Italian marketplace. In fact, it was one of the reasons why Italy's economy remained relatively strong throughout the 20th century.
FIAT Is Now Part of Stellantis
In the 1980s, a downturn in Turin meant the end of the greatest period in FIAT history. However, the company managed to stay around after a merger with Chrysler. Later, the firm merged with PSA to create the brand now known as Stellantis.
How FIAT and Italy are Intertwined
During the First World War, FIAT was instrumental in building tanks that would be used in the battlefields of Italy and throughout Europe. The company would again shift from making automobiles to making war machines when war broke out again in the late 1930s and into the early 40s. The company made perhaps Italy's finest vehicle, the FIAT 500 Topolino, between those two periods.
FIAT Continues to Be a Strong Brand Today
Although FIAT is not nearly as powerful as it was throughout much of the 20th century, it still commands a strong following. Consumers in the United States, Europe, and elsewhere buy used FIAT vehicles and show them off whenever they can. Ultimately, there is a good chance that the brand will last for another 125 years or more.
