The FIAT 500X is one of the most recent arrivals from this Italian automaker, having debuted for the 2016 model year. Since then, it has rapidly developed a following thanks to its unique looks and compact crossover utility. For the 2018 model year, the engineers at Fiat Chrysler have not made a lot of changes to this winning formula. The biggest update seen on this year's model is the updated UConnect 4 system that is now standard on all models. In addition to being faster and more effective, this system also incorporates the popular Android Auto and Apple CarPlay programs that let you use your smartphone apps through the car's infotainment system seamlessly. At seven inches, the new screen is also larger than any of the touchscreen options on last year's model and comes standard with a rearview camera as well. This gives the 2018 FIAT 500X some extra modern functionality to go with its flashy retro style.
Last year, Fiat has trimmed down the complicated list of options and packages from the initial release of the 500X into three simple and straightforward packages. The Pop model is the basic entry-level model. It comes standard with the smaller of the two engine options available on the 500X and a manual transmission, with the larger engine and automatic transmission as available features. All-wheel drive is also an optional feature. Outside of the new infotainment system and a rear-view camera, this model does not have much more than a basic set of features. The Trekking model channels an adventurous, off-road feel and comes standard with the stronger 2.4-liter engine and automatic transmission. It can be customized with a number of packages covering amenities such as heated and powered seats, a sunroof and premium speakers and an advanced safety suite. The 500X Lounge is the high-end model of the three. It comes standard with the larger engine and automatic transmission, as well as most of the optional features available on the Trekking model. Only the sunroof, premium audio and the advanced safety package are not included and are available as separate options.
The FIAT 500X, as last year, is powered by two different powertrain options. The basic engine, standard on the Pop trim level, is a 1.4-liter turbo that puts out 160 horsepower and comes with a six-speed manual transmission. This makes this a fun engine for the hands-on driving enthusiasts, but it is only available on the base model and can't be equipped with all-wheel drive, limiting its versatility for some drivers. The stronger engine of the two is a 2.4-liter naturally aspirated power plant that is matched with a nine-speed automatic transmission and available in both front-wheel and all-wheel drive. It produces up to 180 horsepower. Regardless of the engine under the hood, the 500X brings the storied FIAT agility to the compact crossover SUV class. It is quick, agile and remains fairly composed through all kinds of road maneuvers.
Despite its pastel color options and flashy exterior, the FIAT 500X packs some serious safety chops underneath its sheet metal. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash tested this bite-sized crossover and gave it a top score in every category they've assessed, along with awarding it a Top Safety Pick medal. This excellent safety track is only underscored by its advanced active safety measures that include automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring and lane departure sensors.
